If they fight for their own site, compromise. The best thing about the
internet is that anyone can buy a domain name
for $7/year. Let them get http://wackymorningshow.com and
forward it to http://yourradiostationsite.com/wackymorningshow.html .
Every time someone types in wackymorningshow.com, they will find
themselves at the morning show section on your site. That way, they
get their “own site” but it is still a part of the station’s web
presence. Domain forwarding usually comes free with any domain
purchase.
If you’re a morning show or an ambitious jock, buy your own domain name
and have it forward to the respective page on the station’s site. That
way, when you get fired or move, you just redirect it to your new
station and people will be able to follow you throughout your career.
Left alone, we will still prevail
Now, if you’re a morning show with an unresponsive PD, or the PD search
has been dragging on for months (I have been there multiple times),
just start your own site. Even if you don’t know HTML and web design,
start small. Get your own free blogger account, and forward your
domain name to the blogspot page.
After every show, put up links to the stories you talked about,
pictures of your street guy in a Speedo at the grocery store – whatever
listeners can point to when they want to tell other people what they
missed by not listening in that morning. It will take just a few
minutes each day, and your fans will be able to be involved with the
show the 20 hours per day you’re not even on the air - as unbelievable
as that is.
