STOP THE GEEKERY!!!!
OK, OK, sorry. I am a hardcore geek, with two hacked TiVos in open cases running alongside 4 other PCs in the living room. I never put the case back on the PC since I'm always taking it off to fool around with something inside. My next project is to solder a small chip on my non-iPod, hacked, hard drive mp3 player just so I can wake up to my collection of songs ripped in the Open Source Ogg format. I'm doing it not because it's easy, but because it is hard and I love a good challenge. (Engineers are nodding their heads in agreement here.)
If you are not one of us - you value your time enough not to waste it on ridiculous projects that will break the second you put the cover back on - then the simple answer to web-hosting is:
Shared Hosting is likely good enough (if it's not - you'll find out soon enough)
Unless you are planning in developing a custom web site in .NET, Linux hosting is the way to go. It will handle HTML and PHP if you decide to go that way.
Linux restricts you from using .NET - but that's fine.
If you have a website that gets an absurd amount of traffic and is straining under the weight of its visitors - it's time to bring in someone to help you out. The bigger the site, the more unique the circumstances that affect the decision for hosting - but hopefully this column will give you at least a few terms that you can throw around during the next meeting so that it will sound like you know what you're talking about. Isn't that what all this is about, anyway?
As always, AllAccess has my “The Net Untangled Tip of the
Day” each weekday and a column on Website Wednesdays. So check back and
together we’ll get our internet presence focused on keeping radio strong in
this world of increasing competition.
Do you agree with
me? Or am I full of hot air? If you have comments or any questions about radio
websites – either general questions relating to the industry or the web or even
specific (HTML, PHP, .NET, Javascript, etc.) questions, send me an email
through http://Preppermint.net/contact
. I’ll answer your question quickly and maybe even use it for a future column.
